Switching plasticto mono-material packaging for braised food

One of the top three braised food companies in China faced challenges with their packaging. Their current lid films and plastic containers, made from various materials like polyester, nylon, polyolefin, and EVOH, were not recyclable. Our client wanted to start with the plastic containers, the largest component, and switch to a single material.

Before approaching us, the client had tested samples from many leading domestic flexible packaging companies, all of which had failed. We successfully passed the client's validation, becoming the first company in China to meet their requirements.

The Challenge

The original containers used EVOH, which provided excellent gas barrier properties and preserved freshness. Removing EVOH risked reducing these properties

To achieve single material packaging, we could only retain the main component of the plastic container, polyester.

The original lid film's heat seal layer and the plastic container’s surface were both made of polyolefin, ensuring good heat sealing even with oily seals.

Our solution required removing the polyolefin surface from the plastic container while maintaining effective heat sealing, especially when the seal was oily. The client insisted on maintaining the sealing performance.

The Outcome

Material Enhancement:

We added oxygen-absorbing and oxygen-barrier additives to the polyester material of the plastic containers, ensuring they met the single material requirement.

Redesigned Heat Seal Layer:

We redesigned the lid film's heat seal layer to ensure excellent compatibility with the plastic containers.
